Cootamundra Sunday 14 July 2002 emails still eagerly received on longw@acr.net.au
Tried to talk to you at Bathurst last night but the computer crashed, sorry. Was tired and cold so might not have made any sense!!
Here we are with the kids' trip sadly finished. It is a little deflating to be taking out all there stuff, books, souvenirs, toys, clothes...all the reminders of the last 8+ weeks and 12700kilometres. Lib and I still have to get the machine to Melbourne but it just won't be the same. It is good that the girls will get a rest with as little driving as possible for the next 4 or 5 days. And it is nice to know that they have reached the end of the trip safely.
Well, I have to tell you about the late changes in our itinerary that occurred after we left Tweed Heads on Thursday!! We stayed a little longer than we anticipated in Tweed meaning that we only got as far as Lismore that night. The dark comes down a lot earlier than it had been in Nthn Qld and Nthn Territory. We had a nice trip and stopped at the Macadamia Castle somewhere! It was quite nice. Not too many kms this day. We stopped at the Lakeside van park and it had an en suite, and a nice one it was too. It means that I can shower the girls. It is quite a strain for Lib in a normal park with the small cubicles and the distance to walk and the strain of drying the girls etc. Also helps with access during the night and they are warmer to shower in too. There was a nice wooden climbing thingy and a see-saw and swings right across from us which the girls discovered quite quickly with their torches ( I am sure they have a radar for parks!!)
Friday 12 July
We had intended to go up the hill via Casino to Tenterfield as you will recall but the news that night said that they higher centres had had minus 8 degree nights whereas the coastal places had minus 1degree. That was enough for us to change our direction instantly. So next morning we set off to Kempsey via Casino (and what a lovely drive that was earlyish in the morning!!) This had to be a long day to get us within striking distance of Bathurst and Janice and the girls, whom we still had no contact with...would they be there?...would they take us in at no notice??!!. So after a nice throw of the vortexes in the park by the river in Kempsey we headed for Coffs Harbour. We stopped at Moonee Beach (is that the name?) and looked up Pat Kitcher, Robb's mum. She was there and after a quick hello she sent us into town to catch Robb who was lunching with his neice, Marni. We found them in the mall and had a quick ambush and hello as they were both eating and a working lunch hour is short!! He was suitably surprised but did not like my beard I don't think (haven't found anyone who does!!)
After a quick lunch ourselves we headed south and were going okay until we were pulled up for a breath test. This is okay of course except that the nice gentleman asked for my licence. Well I had it 8 weeks ago in Melbourne but were I put it that day I had no idea. So I shooed the girls out of the van and that did the trick. The twins went feral and after hitting each other with sticks Janaya finally pulled off the coup de grace by picking up a 3 metre branch and almost hitting the police car. This hurried the nice constable into the only action open to him, he let me go!! Well, not quite the truth, as we were able to show him the rental agreement which had my licence number on it and this was good enough for him. He did let on that he loved to pull over motorhomes as he enjoyed finding out where they had been. I wonder if this is a form of corruption or prejudice or something!! It was all done in good humour and we had a lovely chat (and blew negative in the bag to boot, of course..hic!!) However, this took a good 25-30 mins off our travelling time and that was time we could ill afford. The upshot of it was that we wandered into Taree at 6.30pm in the dark. I was absolutely beat (Lib, too) and the lady at the park even commented on how tired I looked.
Perhaps this explains why she placed us at the furthest site away from the toilets, next to the barbecue fire which was billowing smoke over our van and opposite a permanent van with a German Shepherd which barked ferociously the moment we stepped out of the van!!?!! I marched back ready for a tussle but the nice husband was there this time and he immediately (meekly??) told me to move anywhere!! In the meantime a caravan had arrived and driven into the last remaining ideal site in the park!! Did I do something to that lady in the office?!! So we moved and had a lovely time and a lovely sleep.
Saturday 13 July Taree to Bathurst 489 kilometres on top of yesterdays long haul!! Not much to say, getting tired now. Had lunch in the carpark of a roadhouse near the Wyong turnoff. We cooked leftovers...and sat on our own chairs and table. ONly spent $1.90 in the expensive roadhouse (should have seen the prices!!) Even the kids had a play on their play equipment. I did get fuel there though!!
The trip down the expressway was lovely around Brooklyn, especially in the full sunshine that has followed us everywhere for the last 6 or 7 weeks!! Straight through Hornsby, Parramatta, Penrith and on up the mountains to Katoomba. I must tell you at this stage the cold of winter began to bite and I had to put on a singlet and even a top though the shorts remained firmly in place (not too firmly!!) I did see one other strange man at the 3 Sisters with shorts and just a t-shirt on!! The 3 Sisters was lit up magnificently in the late afternoon light with totally blue skies again accompanying us for about the 7th week in a row! We had a squeeze to get to the lookout as it is being totally refurbished with very little left from what was there before. And the tourists...4 deep...are we classed as travellers??!! Finally into Bathurst to surprise Janice, Hollie and Cassie who had just arrived home from a very busy week. They were very welcoming nevertheless and we had a lovely evening of pizzas and funny videos and travel stories and, of course, the mandatory photo viewing session...maybe you will be subjected to this soon!! Sunday 14 July 2002 I woke in the van to minus temperatures and the sound of....wait for it...rain on the roof of the van. This was a new experience!! The rest of the family slept inside in the warmth which was good as they refuse to wear runners or much warm clothing for that matter. We took off and had a lovely trip through to Cootamundra. We had not realised how lovely a drive this is but we look at things a little differently from the vantage point of the big van. We stopped firstly at Carcoar and had a lovely time. Devonshire teas etc plus some books and knick knacks and a nice walk around town, the courthouse is very nice and free to enter, plus a play on the swings. Nice to include this place in our trip...it ties in well with the many varied places we have visited and the things we have seen. Lunch at Cowra next to the new McDonalds which has been relatively tastefully incorporated into the tourist area just south of the bridge...food looked the same though. A play of vortex in the park and we were off on the last leg of the journey for the kids. Will send this as I don't want to lose the connection as I did last night. Lib and I are off to Melbourne, or close, today and drop off our lovely van tomorrow at Bartrak at Berwick near Dandenong. Look up the Bartrak web site and you can see an interactive camera view of the inside of our van!! Try it, it is interesting. Bye for now, it has been great and I will update again soon, and hopefully put up some of the 200 digital pix we took. Thanks for viewing, Warwick, Libby, Kelsie, Brittany and Janaya.
